DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Two animals, including a small puppy, were saved from a Daytona Beach fire on Saturday, fire officials said.
Fire crews were dispatched to the 300 block of Hartford Avenue at about 6 p.m. for a structure fire. Fire crews arrived on scene and found heavy smoke coming from the front door and garage area of the one-story concrete block building.
Fire officials said the fire started in the rear bedroom between the mattress and dresser area.
Fire crews found two birds dead in their cage near the front door. But as they continued to search the structure, they discovered a small black puppy underneath a bed in the rear bedroom. Fire personnel quickly removed the pet from the structure and began to treat the puppy with high-flow oxygen using a pet oxygen recovery and resuscitation mask.
The last pet was found unharmed moments later in a neighbor’s yard.
The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
The occupant and surviving animals were receiving aid from the American Red Cross.
